Mahmud Devji Memorial Summer Camp
‘Encouraging Excellence Through Education and Spirituality’

In The Name Of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In 1983 the Late Mahmud Devji along with his colleagues at the East End Madressa had a vision to bring the youth of the community together to promote unity, Islamic awareness and recreation. Thus the first ever Islamic Summer Camp was held in the summer of 1983 and so began an annual tradition which became a must attend event for the youth of the community. The youth played together, prayed together, ate together and discussed together. Bonds were made that until this day exist amongst those who attended. The camp ran successfully and became a community fixture in the late 80’s and early 90’s. During its run, the camp saw 2 generations of youth pass through its doors as well as some of the finest speakers in the Shia world. Medical orientations and discussions were also a part of the camp and as well as some of the best debates from some of the brightest youth of the community were witnessed. The camp itself became a spring board for awareness in the community between youth and parents and led to many other noble endeavours.

Sadly, Mahmud Devji the man with the vision and camp organizer who had taken the camp to where it was fell ill in the early 90’s and ultimately succumbed to his illness in April 2001 leaving behind his legacy. It is in this spirit that we his family and friends are now attempting to bring back this annual institution so that not only does the legacy of Mahmud Devji live on, but so too the vision of serving the youth of the community. The late Mahmud Devji firmly believed that the youth as the future should be prepared for what they will face in the world that we live in so that they may persevere. This perseverance from the youth will in turn allow the community as a whole to survive in the harsh world that we live in.

Please recite Sura-e-Fateha for the Late Mahmud Devji and all those Marhumin especially those who have given their services to the summer camps of the past.
